ASCIF’s Inspiring Journey at the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha

At the African Smart Cities Innovation Foundation (ASCIF), we’re absolutely thrilled to share our recent experiences from the vibrant heart of Doha, Qatar. We had the incredible opportunity to actively participate in the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2), a pivotal United Nations event held from November 4-6, 2025, at the state-of-the-art Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). This summit wasn’t just another gathering; it was a convergence of visionary leaders, dedicated policymakers, innovative organizations, and passionate advocates from around the world, all united in their mission to address critical global challenges such as poverty eradication, social inclusion, gender equality, and sustainable development. As a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization deeply committed to empowering African cities through cutting-edge innovation, smart infrastructure, and community-driven solutions, ASCIF was honored to bring our unique perspective and expertise to the table. Our involvement allowed us to showcase Africa’s potential while forging meaningful connections that could shape the future of social development on the continent.

Setting the Stage: The Significance of WSSD2

To truly appreciate our participation, it’s worth reflecting on the broader context of the summit. Marking the 30th anniversary of the first World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen in 1995, WSSD2 served as a crucial checkpoint for evaluating global progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With themes revolving around “Social Development in Times of Multiple Crises: Towards a More Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Future,” the event highlighted the urgent need for collaborative action in an era marked by climate change, economic instability, and social disparities. Doha, with its blend of tradition and modernity, provided the perfect backdrop for these discussions, symbolizing the bridge between emerging and developed economies.

For ASCIF, this summit aligned seamlessly with our core mission: to foster socio-economically empowered African cities that are resilient, inclusive, and innovative. We focus on areas like smart housing, efficient transportation, renewable energy, and integrated urban planning, all while prioritizing community engagement and sustainability. Participating in WSSD2 reinforced our belief that Africa’s growth is intertwined with global efforts, and it gave us a platform to amplify African voices in international dialogues.

Our Flagship Side Event: “Advancing Food Security and Social Integration in Africa”

At the heart of our participation was our dynamic side event on November 5, 2025, themed “Advancing Food Security and Social Integration in Africa.” This hybrid interactive session, held from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (QAT) in Exhibition Hall 6 at Booth No. 24, was meticulously designed to be inclusive, gender-friendly, and accessible to everyone, whether delegates were immersing themselves in the summit’s energetic atmosphere in person or connecting virtually from afar via Zoom. We aimed to create a space where ideas could flow freely, barriers could be broken down, and actionable insights could emerge.

The event attracted a diverse crowd, including UN representatives, African policymakers, NGO leaders, academics, and entrepreneurs. It was more than just a presentation; it was a collaborative workshop that encouraged participants to share their experiences and brainstorm solutions. By the end of the day, the room (and virtual chat) was buzzing with enthusiasm, as attendees exchanged contacts and pledged to continue the conversation beyond the summit.

Why This Theme Resonates Deeply with ASCIF’s Work

Africa’s challenges are multifaceted and interconnected. With a rapidly growing population projected to double by 2050, the continent grapples with issues like climate-induced droughts, inefficient land management, widespread deforestation, and inadequate adaptation strategies. These factors not only threaten food security but also exacerbate social inequalities, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa where millions face hunger and malnutrition. At ASCIF, we see food security not as an isolated issue but as a cornerstone of social integration and urban development. Our approach emphasizes a holistic “value chain” model that spans from sustainable farming practices to efficient distribution networks and market access.

This theme ties directly into Africa’s Agenda 2063, the blueprint for a prosperous, united continent. We advocate for regional integration to reduce inequalities, promote a shared African identity, and drive economic growth. By drawing on successful case studies from across Africa and the world, our event highlighted how technology, such as AI-driven agriculture, blockchain for supply chain transparency, and smart irrigation systems, can revolutionize food systems. We also stressed the importance of inclusive policies that empower women and youth, who are often at the forefront of agricultural innovation yet face systemic barriers.

Event Highlights: Speakers, Discussions, and Breakthrough Moments

The session unfolded in two engaging parts: a virtual Zoom segment from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by in-person interactions that extended into the afternoon. Our lineup of distinguished speakers and our expert moderator brought a wealth of knowledge and passion to the stage, creating an environment ripe for inspiration and collaboration.

  • Mr. David Olatunji, our President and Founder, kicked things off with a powerful keynote on integrating smart city technologies into food security frameworks. He shared real-world examples from ASCIF’s projects, like our pilot programs in Nigerian cities where IoT sensors have optimized water usage in urban farms, leading to a 30% increase in crop yields.
  • Barr. (Ms) Taiwo-Ojo Toyin Ndidi, a valued Board of Trustees member, delved into the policy landscape, advocating for frameworks that promote social integration and equitable resource distribution. She emphasized the role of governments in creating enabling environments for innovation, drawing parallels to successful models in countries like Rwanda and Kenya.
  • Ms. Oluwole Oluwatoyin Praise, Head of Operations at PICPAH Company Ltd, provided practical insights into building resilient agricultural value chains. Her stories of community-led initiatives in West Africa illustrated how local empowerment can lead to sustainable change, resonating deeply with the audience.
  • Mr. Akin Fadeyi, CEO of the Akin Fadeyi Foundation, tackled the intersections of inequality and community resilience. He shared compelling data on how social programs can mitigate the impacts of crises, urging a shift toward proactive, inclusive strategies.
  • Ms. Popoola Ayoola Mubarakat, CEO of Naija Food Biz, brought an entrepreneurial flair, discussing innovative agribusiness models that leverage digital tools to connect farmers with markets. Her enthusiasm for youth involvement sparked several audience questions about scaling such ventures.
  • Guiding it all was Mr. Shittu Baba Shittu, our skilled Moderator from ASCIF, who ensured every voice was heard. His facilitation turned potential debates into constructive dialogues, fostering a sense of unity among diverse participants.

One standout moment was a breakout discussion on climate adaptation, where attendees brainstormed ways to incorporate indigenous knowledge into modern tech solutions. Quotes from the event capture the spirit: “Innovation isn’t just about gadgets; it’s about people coming together to solve real problems,” shared Mr. Olatunji. Another participant noted, “This session reminded me that Africa’s future is bright when we integrate food security with social harmony.”The hybrid format was a game-changer, allowing us to reach over 200 virtual participants from across Africa and beyond. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the event’s accessibility and relevance.

Key Takeaways and Emerging Partnerships

ASCIF

From the discussions, several key takeaways emerged that will guide ASCIF’s future work:

  • Climate-Resilient Strategies: Emphasizing science-based approaches to combat deforestation and improve land management.
  • Inclusive Innovation: Prioritizing gender equality and youth engagement in food systems.
  • Regional Collaboration: Strengthening ties across African nations to build integrated value chains.
  • Tech Integration: Using AI, data analytics, and renewable energy to enhance sustainability.

We also forged exciting partnerships during the summit. For instance, conversations with UN agencies and Middle Eastern NGOs opened doors for joint projects on smart agriculture in arid regions. These alliances could lead to funding opportunities and knowledge exchanges that amplify our impact.

Reflections: A Catalyst for Lasting Change

Participating in WSSD2 was transformative for ASCIF. It wasn’t merely an event; it was a catalyst that reignited our passion and expanded our network. We left Doha with renewed energy, inspired by the global commitment to social development and reminded of the power of collective action. The summit’s emphasis on resilience in times of crisis mirrors our daily work in African cities, where we strive to create safe, efficient infrastructures that uplift communities.

As we reflect on the experience, we’re grateful for the platform to highlight Africa’s innovations. Events like this underscore that progress isn’t linear; it’s built on shared visions and persistent effort.
